Flipping vs Pitching: What's the Difference, and What Weight Does Each Need?

Ask around a boat ramp and you will hear flipping and pitching used as if they were the same thing, usually by someone doing one of them and calling it the other. They are not the same. They are two different ways of delivering a bait into cover, they suit different distances, and — the part that gets skipped — they do not want the same weight on the line.

Flipping and pitching are two deliveries, not one technique

Both put a soft plastic into cover quietly and accurately at close range. That shared purpose is why the words blur together. The difference is mechanical, and it is worth knowing because it decides how much mass you need.

A flip never leaves your hand and never uses the reel. A pitch does use the reel, and it goes further. Everything else follows from that.

What a flip actually is

You set a fixed length of line — usually somewhere between one and two rod lengths — and you leave it there. Line comes off the reel once, you hold a loop of it in your free hand, and you swing the bait out on a pendulum by raising and dropping the rod tip while feeding that loop. The bait goes out, drops in, and comes back on the same fixed length. The reel stays shut the whole time.

That makes flipping a short-range, high-repetition delivery. You are working a bank of cover target by target, a few feet at a time, and the appeal is that you can put a bait into thirty holes in a row without a single real cast. It is also close to silent, because nothing is being thrown.

The limitation is reach. Beyond about fifteen feet the pendulum runs out of arc and accuracy falls apart.

What a pitch actually is

A pitch is an underhand cast. You hold the bait in your free hand, load the rod against its weight, release the bait and the spool at the same moment, and let it travel low and flat to the target. The reel is in gear at the end, thumbed to stop the bait exactly where you want it.

That buys you distance — twenty, thirty feet, sometimes more — while keeping the bait low enough to slide under overhanging limbs and dock walkways. The cost is that a pitch has to be loaded and released, which means the weight is now doing a job it never had to do on a flip.

If you take one thing from this: a flip is powered by gravity, a pitch is powered by the rod. A rod cannot load against a bait that weighs nothing.

Why the delivery changes what weight you want

Three things change between the two.

Rod loading. On a flip, the weight only has to sink. On a pitch it also has to bend the rod on a short, controlled stroke. Too light and the rod never loads, the bait lobs instead of shooting, and accuracy goes with it. This is the single most common reason a pitch will not go where it is aimed, and anglers usually blame the wrist.

Entry angle. A flip drops nearly vertically. A pitch arrives on a shallow trajectory and has to stop dead on target rather than skate past it. Heavier weights kill their own momentum better on entry, which is why a pitch tolerates — and often wants — a step up from what you would flip.

Line management. A flip is fished on a fixed, tight line with almost no slack. A pitch has line coming off a spool, and the further it travels the more slack there is to take up before you feel anything. More distance argues for more weight, purely so you can still read what the bait is touching.

The sizes, by what you are pitching into

Work from the cover, then adjust up for distance, wind and depth. Every size below is a flipping weight, which is the same cone shape as a worm weight carried up into the heavier end of the range.

3/16 oz — shallow, sparse and clear. The lightest weight worth pitching. Isolated cover in two or three feet of water, clear conditions, fish that spook off a hard entry. This is a flipping size more than a pitching one — at 3/16 there is not much for a heavy rod to load against, so if you are pitching any real distance with it you will feel the delivery go vague.

1/4 oz — cover you can see through. Scattered wood, dock posts, the outside edge of a grass line, isolated bushes in open water. It pitches quietly and it is light enough that the fall still does the presenting. If your day is picking apart visible targets in shallow water, this is the one that stays tied on.

3/8 oz — the balance point. Heavy enough to load a flipping rod properly on a long pitch and to get down through moderate cover without stalling; light enough that you still feel what the bait is passing. For a lot of anglers this is simply the default, and the first size to run out. If you are buying one flipping weight before you know your water, buy this.

1/2 oz — when 3/8 stops getting through. Thicker brush, deeper laydowns, standing timber, a stiff wind putting a bow in your line, or grass that has grown up into the water column. Also the size that rescues a windy afternoon when your 3/8 stops reporting bottom.

5/8 and 3/4 oz — the heavy end of pitching. Deep wood, thick brush piles, and the first sizes that will genuinely force their way into vegetation rather than settling onto it. By 3/4 you are on the boundary with punching.

Where flipping stops and punching starts

The line between them is not a size, it is a question: are you forcing the bait through something?

If the bait falls into cover, you are flipping or pitching. If there is a surface you have to break first — a matted canopy of hydrilla, milfoil or hyacinth — you are punching, and that is a different job with a different weight range, generally 1 oz to 2 oz. The mistake goes both ways. Pitching a 1-1/2 oz into scattered wood drives the bait to the bottom before anything can react to it. Trying to punch a real mat with 1/2 oz leaves you shaking the rod tip and calling the water empty. Neither is a fishing problem; both are a weight problem.

Entry noise, and the size that fixes it

Shallow, clear, pressured water punishes a loud entry more than most anglers account for. A bass sitting in three feet of water under a dock post does not need to see you to leave; it needs to hear something arrive like a thrown rock.

Two fixes, in order. First, deliver flatter — the lower and flatter the bait comes in, the less of its energy goes downward into the water. Second, drop a size. Going from 3/8 to 1/4 oz on a shallow, clear bank costs you a little rod load and buys you a much softer landing, and on pressured fish that trade is usually worth making.

The reverse holds in stained water or heavy cover, where entry noise matters far less and the extra mass is free.

Peg it, or let it slide

Pegging matters more here than almost anywhere. Flipping and pitching are cover techniques, and an unpegged weight in cover slides up the line on the drop, arrives ahead of the bait, and drops into a crevice on its own. Now you have a wedged weight, a bait hanging above it, and a presentation you never designed.

Peg the weight in wood, brush and grass, and the whole rig arrives and leaves as a single object. Leave it free on clean bottom, where a sliding weight lets the bait settle more naturally after the weight lands.

A bobber stop above the weight is the tidy way to do it, and unlike a toothpick it will not leave a broken end sitting against your line right above the knot. They live under terminal tackle. The full argument is in should you peg your worm weight.

Line, rod and the thing the weight does not do

Both deliveries are close-range and both end with a fish in cover, which is why heavy braid is so common for them — it has very little stretch, not none, so it telegraphs what the bait is touching and it does not give the fish slack to work with on the way out.

Worth stating plainly because it circulates backwards: the weight does not drive the hook home. It gets the bait to the fish and controls how it falls. The hookset comes from the rod, the line, and you taking up slack. A heavier weight will not compensate for a soft rod or a slow reaction — it will only fall faster.

Why the profile matters at close range

Flipping and pitching put a weight into the tightest cover it will ever see: forks in a laydown, the gap between dock post and brace, the middle of a brush pile. Width is what gets you stuck in there.

For the same weight, tungsten takes up roughly 35% less volume than lead, which works out to about 13% narrower across. That is a real edge in a fork, and it is worth being precise about, because it gets overstated constantly — the volume figure is three-dimensional, so a 3/8 oz tungsten weight is visibly slimmer than a 3/8 oz lead one, not half the size.

The hardness is the other half. A dense, hard weight passes on what it just hit instead of absorbing it, so on a short pitch — where you have almost no line out and every tick reaches you — you can tell a limb from a rock from a bite.

A realistic flipping and pitching selection

You do not need the whole ladder. Most anglers pitch a narrow band over and over.

  • 3/8 oz — the one that stays tied on
  • 1/4 oz — for shallow, clear, visible targets
  • 1/2 oz — for wind, depth and thicker brush
  • A card of bobber stops, so each of those can be pegged or left free

That covers wood, brush, dock posts and grass edges. Add 5/8 and 3/4 oz when your water has deep timber in it, and step across to the punching sizes only when you meet an actual mat.
