What Size Weight for a Texas Rig? A Cover, Depth and Current Guide

Ask ten anglers what size weight to put on a Texas rig and you will get ten answers, most of them starting with depth. Depth is the wrong place to start. Start with what you are trying to get the bait through, then adjust for depth, wind and current.

Start with cover, not depth

A 1/4 oz weight in eight feet of open water and a 1/4 oz weight in eight feet of matted grass are completely different propositions. In the first case the weight only has to carry the bait down. In the second it has to break a surface first. Everything below assumes you have looked at the cover before you looked at your depth finder.

1/16 and 1/8 oz: sparse cover, clear water, slow fall

This is the finesse end. Clear water, bed fish, cold fronts, anything where the fall itself is the presentation. A 1/8 oz worm weight lets a creature bait glide down on a slack line and gives a pressured fish time to commit. The 1/16 oz is for when even that is too much.

The trade-off is control. Below 1/8 oz you lose the ability to feel what the bait is touching once there is any wind on the water at all.

3/16 and 1/4 oz: the everyday default

If you only carried one Texas rig weight, it would be 1/4 oz. Enough to cast into a breeze and get through light grass, still light enough to keep a fall fish will eat. 3/16 oz splits the difference when the water is clearer or the fish are fussier.

This is also the size you go through fastest, which is why it exists as a 12-piece bundle and the 1/8 as a 16-piece.

5/16 and 1/2 oz: wind, depth and thicker grass

Worth knowing before you go shopping: our worm weight ladder steps 1/4, 5/16, 1/2 — there is no 3/8 oz in the line. That surprises people, because 3/8 is a common size elsewhere. The 5/16 oz covers most of what you would have reached 3/8 for, and if you want 3/8 specifically, the 3/8 oz flipping weight slides onto a worm hook fine.

Go here when the wind is putting a bow in your line, when you are fishing past about fifteen feet, or when the grass has grown up into the water column enough that a lighter weight hangs in the canopy instead of dropping through it.

When the cover is winning

There is a point where a Texas rig stops being the right tool. If you are looking at a matted canopy — hydrilla or hyacinth with a surface you would have to break — that is a punching job, and it takes 1 to 2 oz, not a heavy worm weight. Most anglers punch with 1 to 1-1/4 oz. That is the flipping range, on heavier line and a heavier rod.

A 1/2 oz worm weight handles thick grass and heavy brush. It does not punch a canopy, and trying to make it is how people conclude the fish were not there.

Pegged or free-sliding?

Peg it when you are fishing cover and want the weight and the bait to arrive together. An unpegged weight in grass slides up the line on the fall, the bait separates behind it, and the presentation you designed is not what the fish sees.

Leave it free on open bottom. A sliding weight lets the bait drift down more naturally after the weight lands, which on a hard bottom is often exactly what you want. Bobber stops are the tidy way to peg — see terminal tackle. Toothpicks work, but the broken end sits against your line just above the knot and can nick it.

Fall rate and line

Line changes the answer more than most people account for. Thicker line and more line drag slow the fall; a heavier weight compensates. Braid has very little stretch — a few percent, not zero — which is why it telegraphs bottom composition so well and why you can often fish a slightly lighter weight on braid and still feel everything.

Worth separating two things people run together: weight affects how the bait gets down and how it moves. It does not drive the hook home. Hookset power comes from the rod, the line and taking up slack.

Wind, current and boat position

Wind is the most common reason to move up a size, and the mechanism is line bow rather than the weight failing to sink. A bowed line means you feel the bite late and set into slack. If you are fishing into a chop and cannot feel bottom composition, go up one step before you change anything else.

Current does the same thing horizontally. Position the boat so you are working with the current rather than across it where you can, and you will often fish a lighter weight than the conditions would otherwise force on you.

Match the weight to the bait, not just the cover

Two baits of the same length can need different weights. A slim finesse worm has almost no water resistance and falls close to whatever the weight makes it do. A bulky creature bait with flapping appendages has a lot of drag, and that drag fights the weight the whole way down.

The practical version: if you swap from a straight worm to a big-armed craw and keep the same weight, you have just slowed your fall down without deciding to. Sometimes that is exactly what you want. If it is not, go up one step. The same applies in reverse — downsizing the bait usually means you can downsize the weight and keep the same fall.

Bait profile also changes what gets through cover. A compact bait behind a compact tungsten weight is one clean shape entering the grass. A wide bait behind the same weight is a shape that opens up on contact and hangs.

Season changes the answer

Cold water is the clearest case. Fish are slower, less willing to chase, and a fast fall drops past them before they commit — so most anglers go lighter in winter and early spring than the depth alone would suggest. A 1/8 oz in ten feet of cold water is not unusual.

Summer flips it. Fish are active, cover is thick, and a faster fall triggers reaction bites rather than spooking them. This is also when the grass is at its heaviest, which pushes you up the ladder for a second, independent reason.

Autumn is the awkward one. Bait is scattered, fish are chasing, and you are often covering water rather than picking apart cover — which usually argues for enough weight to fish quickly, on the heavier end of whatever the cover allows.

Three mistakes that cost fish

Defaulting heavy. A heavier weight is easier to cast and easier to feel, so it is the comfortable choice, and it is wrong more often than it is right in clear or pressured water. If you are not getting bit on the fall, try lighter before you try somewhere else.

Not pegging in grass. Covered above, but it is the single most common one. An unpegged weight in grass arrives without the bait, and the fish sees a presentation you never intended.

Ignoring the wind because the cast still works. You can cast a 1/4 oz into a stiff breeze all day. The problem is not the cast, it is that the bow in your line means you feel the bite a beat late and set into slack. If you cannot feel bottom composition, go up.

Common questions

What is the best all-round Texas rig weight?

1/4 oz. It casts well, gets through light and moderate cover, and keeps a fall most fish will eat. If you carry one size, carry that one.

Do I need tungsten, or will lead do?

Lead catches fish. Tungsten is denser — about 1.6 times — so the same ounce is a smaller piece of metal that slides through cover instead of dragging it, and the harder material telegraphs bottom composition more clearly. Whether that is worth the price difference is your call; the difference is real but it is an edge, not a different sport.

Why does my weight keep hanging up?

Usually shape and size rather than bad luck. A bulkier weight wedges where a compact one slides through, and an unpegged weight separates from the bait and finds its own way into a fork. If it is happening constantly in rock rather than grass, that is a case for a narrower profile.

Should I use a bead between the weight and the knot?

A bead protects the knot from the weight hammering it and adds a click of sound. It also adds length to the rig, which matters if you are trying to keep the whole thing compact for cover. In grass most anglers skip it and peg instead.

How do I know I have gone too light?

You stop being able to tell what the bait is touching. If you cannot feel the difference between gravel, sand and wood, you are not fishing the rig — you are dragging it and hoping. Go up one step and the bottom comes back.

Why tungsten sizes look small

Our weights are a 97% tungsten alloy, around 18.0 g/cm3 against lead's 11.34 — roughly 1.6 times denser. The same ounce takes up about 37% less volume. It is worth being precise about what that means, because it is easy to over-read: 37% is the drop in volume. The linear dimensions come down by about 14%, since that is the cube root of the volume change. A tungsten weight is noticeably slimmer and shorter than the lead you are used to, not a third of the length.
