Braid or Fluorocarbon? Line Choice for Feeling the Bottom
Every guide to bottom fishing eventually says "you'll feel more with tungsten". That is true, but it is only the first link in the chain. What the weight picks up still has to travel through your line before it reaches your hand, and line is where most of that information gets lost.
Here is the plain version, without the brand arguments.
The three lines, and what each one costs you
Braid
Very little stretch — not zero, which is a claim you will see constantly and it is wrong. What little it has is not what sets your hook. That near-lack of stretch is why braid transmits so well: a tick at the weight arrives at your hand almost unchanged.
It is also thin for its strength, which means less water drag and a straighter line to the bait. The costs: it floats, it is highly visible, and it has no abrasion tolerance against a sharp rock edge compared with a heavier mono or fluoro.
Fluorocarbon
Sinks, which keeps slack under control instead of letting a bow form on the surface. Refracts light close to how water does, so it is harder for fish to pick out in clear water. It has more stretch than braid but far less than mono.
The cost is manageability — heavier fluoro carries coil memory and can be stiff on a spinning reel.
Monofilament
Stretches the most and floats. Both are occasionally what you want — stretch forgives a hard hookset, floating suits a topwater — but for feeling a weight on the bottom it is the weakest of the three. Most bottom contact fishing has moved away from straight mono for exactly that reason.
So what should you actually run?
Texas rig in cover — straight braid
When you are pulling a worm weight through grass and wood, you want two things: to feel the bait enter and leave cover, and enough strength to move a fish out of it. Braid does both. Visibility matters less in stained water and heavy cover, because the fish is reacting at close range.
Texas rig in clear or open water — braid to a fluorocarbon leader
Same sensitivity, with a length of near-invisible line at the business end. This is the default for most people most of the time, and it is worth learning a decent leader knot for.
Drop shot — braid to a fluorocarbon leader, lighter
A drop shot is fished on semi-slack line at range, often in the clearest water you fish. It is the strongest case for a leader in the whole box: you need the transmission to know your weight has landed, and the invisibility because the fish is looking at the bait for a long time.
Finesse, wacky and Neko — light braid to a light leader
With nail weights the bite is often nothing more than the line moving sideways. Anything that stiffens or thickens the connection makes that harder to see and harder to feel.
Shaky head — straight fluorocarbon is defensible
A shaky head is fished slowly on semi-slack line, and fluorocarbon's sinking behaviour helps keep that slack under control. This is the one place where plenty of good anglers skip braid entirely.
Leader length, briefly
Long enough that the braid is well away from the bait, short enough that the knot is not passing through your guides on every cast. Most people settle somewhere in the range of a rod length or a bit less, and go longer in clearer water.
If the knot is catching in your guides on the cast, shorten it. If fish are following and refusing in clear water, lengthen it.
Going lighter is not always more sensitive
A common mistake: dropping to very light line to "feel more". Thinner line does cut water better, but it also stretches further under load if it is mono or fluoro, and it gives you less to work with when a fish is in cover.
Sensitivity comes mostly from stretch and slack, not diameter. A properly sized weight on a tight-ish line will out-feel a lighter weight on a bowed one every time. That is also why over-weighting hurts twice: it kills the fall and it does not actually improve contact once the line is bowed.
Slack is the thing nobody mentions
Line type gets argued about endlessly; slack decides more and gets ignored.
A bow in your line is a stretch you did not choose. Wind puts one there, current puts one there, and a long cast from shore puts one there before you have even started. Whatever the bow absorbs is information you never receive, regardless of what the line is made of.
This is why the honest answer to "I cannot feel anything" is usually not "buy better line". It is: take the slack out. Point the rod lower and into the wind, reel down after the weight lands, and size the weight so it holds bottom rather than drifting. A mid-price fluorocarbon on a tight line beats a premium braid on a bowed one.
When you feel too much
Worth naming, because it catches people who have just switched to braid and tungsten together: you will suddenly feel a great deal, and most of it is not fish.
Ticking through gravel, a stem brushing the line, the weight rolling off a rock — all of it arrives now, and the temptation is to set on everything. Give it a few trips. The signal you are looking for is usually a bite that feels like weight or a line that moves sideways, not a sharp tap. Sharp taps are almost always the bottom.
Where the weight fits into this
Line carries the signal; the weight creates it. A soft weight absorbs the impact it makes against rock or shell and passes on a muffled version. Tungsten is dramatically harder than lead — lead is soft enough to mark with a fingernail — so more of the original signal survives to be carried.
Run good line behind a soft weight and you get a clear signal about nothing much. The two work together or not at all.

- Heavy cover: straight braid.
- Everything else, most days: braid to a fluorocarbon leader.
- Shaky head: straight fluorocarbon is fine.
- Anywhere: the lightest weight that still holds contact.
