Fishing Rock and Riprap Without Losing Every Weight
Rock holds bass and rock takes weights. Those two facts arrive together, and most anglers respond by fishing rock badly — either avoiding it, or paying a tax of six or eight weights a day and calling it the cost of doing business. It is not. Almost all of that loss comes from four habits, and all four are fixable.
Why rock takes weights
There are two different ways a weight gets stuck, and they want opposite solutions.
Wedging is when the weight drives into a narrowing gap between two rocks and jams tighter the harder you pull. This is the one that costs you weights. It is a momentum problem: the weight arrives with enough speed to bury itself.
Pinning is when the line, not the weight, drops into a crevice and the weight sits on top acting as an anchor. This one usually comes free with slack line, and people break it off unnecessarily because they treat it like a wedge and pull harder.
Learning to tell them apart in the first two seconds saves more weights than any tackle change. A wedge feels solid and dead from the moment you load the rod. A pin has a little give, and the rod will often load, release an inch, then load again.
Fix one: go lighter than feels right
The instinct on rock is to go heavier so you can feel the bottom through all that clatter. It is backwards. A heavier weight carries more momentum into every gap it finds, and momentum is what wedges it.
The rule on rock is the lightest weight that still keeps you in contact — not the heaviest you can feel with. On a Texas rig over chunk rock in eight to fifteen feet, that is usually 3/16 or 1/4 oz, not 3/8 or 1/2. You give up a little feel and you get back most of your weight box.
This is one place where tungsten does real work. It is about 1.5 times the density of lead, so a tungsten weight is roughly 13% narrower for the same number on the package. A narrower body means better feel per ounce, which means you can drop a size and still know what you are dragging across. A lead angler needs the extra ounce to feel the bottom. You do not.
Fix two: peg it
An unpegged weight on rock is a weight fishing by itself. It runs ahead of the bait down the line, arrives at the gap first with nothing behind it, and goes in. Peg it and the whole rig behaves as one object — the bulk of the plastic sits directly behind the weight and physically stops it entering anything narrower than the bait.
This is the single highest-return change most people can make on rock, and it costs a bobber stop. It is also the opposite of what you want on clean bottom, where a free-sliding weight lets the bait fall away naturally. Rock is a pegging situation, nearly always. Fix three: lift, do not drag
Watch someone lose weights on rock and they are usually dragging with the rod tip low, pulling the weight horizontally into every gap in front of it. A low rod turns the bottom into a series of wedges aimed straight at your weight.
Fish rock with the rod high — ten or eleven o'clock — and move the bait by lifting and letting it fall back rather than by reeling it across. The weight comes up over the next rock and drops into the gap vertically instead of driving into it sideways. Vertical entries pull straight back out. Sideways entries do not.
The bonus is that most rock bites come on the fall anyway, so the retrieve that hangs less also gets bit more. If your bait never stops moving, you are fishing rock with a technique built for grass flats.
Fix four: the cast angle on riprap
Riprap is its own problem because it is a uniform sloped wall of chunk rock, and the angle you attack it at decides how much of your retrieve is spent grinding into gaps.
- Parallel to the bank keeps the bait at one depth on the fish's level for the whole cast. It also drags your weight along the seam where rocks meet, which is where it hangs. Best for reaction baits, worst for bottom contact.
- Perpendicular, straight at the bank pulls the bait down the slope. Every rock is a step your weight falls off, and it hangs less than you expect, but you are only in the strike zone for part of the retrieve.
- About 45 degrees is the working compromise and where most rock is best fished with a bottom bait. You cover a band of depth rather than a line, and the weight moves diagonally across seams instead of straight down them.
Start at 45, and only go parallel once you have found the depth band the fish are using.
Chunk rock, boulders and bluff ends
Not all rock behaves the same, and the size of the rock should change the weight you use.
Pea gravel and small chunk is forgiving. The gaps are smaller than your weight, so almost nothing wedges. Fish whatever size the depth and wind call for.
Chunk rock — fist to head sized is where most losses happen. The gaps are exactly weight-sized. Peg, go light, lift and drop.
Boulders and bluff ends have gaps big enough that your weight falls through rather than wedging. The danger here is not the weight, it is your line dragging across a hard edge under load. Check the last three feet of line by hand after every good fish and after every hang, and retie without arguing with yourself about it.
Transitions — where chunk rock meets gravel, or rock meets clay — are the highest-percentage spots on the whole bank and worth fishing slowly enough to feel the change. If you cannot feel bottom composition change, your weight is too light or your rod is too soft, and that is the one direction where going up a size is correct.
Flipping and punching around rock
Rock next to cover — laydowns on riprap, bushes on a rocky point — is a different problem. Here you need enough weight to get through the cover, which is more than the rock wants you to use. Accept the trade and manage it: 3/8 or 1/2 oz is usually enough around rock-adjacent wood, and the compact profile of a flipping weight slides out of gaps better than a wide one. Drop shotting rock
Drop shot is the technique that suffers most on rock, because a weight on a dropper tag spends the entire retrieve on the bottom by design. The shape of the weight is the whole answer here, and it has a post of its own: the short version is that a narrow cylinder pulls back out of a crack along the line it went in, and a wider base does not. Getting unstuck without breaking off
Order of operations, and it matters:
- Stop pulling immediately. The first hard pull is what sets a wedge. Go slack the moment you feel dead weight.
- Give it slack and wait. Two or three seconds of a completely loose line lets the weight fall back out of a pin on its own. This alone frees a large share of hangs.
- Change the angle. Move the boat, or walk down the bank, and pull from the opposite side. A weight that went in one way comes out the same way — you just have to ask from the right direction.
- Pluck the line. Point the rod at the hang, pull the line tight with two fingers and let it snap back like a bowstring. The shock travels down and pops the weight up and out. This is far more effective than pulling.
- Only then, break off. Point the rod straight down the line so no load goes through the guides or the tip, lock the reel, and back away steadily until it parts. Never pull with the rod bent and never with the rod pointed at your face — turn your head away, because a weight that comes free under load comes back fast.
What to carry for a rock day
You do not need a full box. You need doubles of the sizes rock actually eats.
- Two or three each of 3/16 and 1/4 oz — the everyday rock sizes
- A couple of 1/2 oz for wind, depth or current
- Bobber stops, more than you think — pegging is the fix and you will re-peg all day
- A skinny drop shot weight or two for when they will not eat a moving bait

Common questions
Does tungsten hang up more than lead because it is harder? Hardness is not what wedges a weight — width and momentum are. A tungsten weight is narrower than a lead one of the same size, which cuts both ways: it enters a narrower gap, but it also carries less cross-section for the rock to grab. In practice the bigger effect is that tungsten lets you fish lighter for the same feel, and lighter is what saves weights.
Should I use braid on rock? Braid gives you a much better chance of pulling a weight free and it does not stretch, so the pluck technique works better with it. It is also more vulnerable to abrasion on a sharp edge than fluorocarbon. Most people run braid with a fluorocarbon leader for exactly this reason — the trade-offs are laid out in braid or fluorocarbon for bottom contact.
Is a round weight better than a bullet shape on rock? A bullet shape is fine as long as it is pegged behind the bait. Unpegged, the taper is what drives it into gaps nose-first. The shape is not the problem; the gap between the weight and the bait is.
How do I know if I am fishing too heavy? Count your hangs. More than one hang every few casts on chunk rock means drop a size before you change anything else.
Why do I lose weights on the hookset? On rock you are often setting into a bait sitting in a gap. Reel down until you feel the fish before you sweep, rather than swinging from slack line — a slack-line swing pulls the rig sideways into the rock.
Bottom line
Rock is not expensive to fish. Fishing rock the way you fish a clean flat is expensive. Go lighter than feels right, peg the weight so the rig moves as one piece, lift instead of dragging, and come at riprap on an angle. Then when you do hang, go slack before you pull.
Do that and rock turns into what it should be — the most reliable bass structure on most lakes, fished for the price of the occasional weight rather than a handful every trip.
