Beginner's Guide to Tungsten Fishing Weights

Tungsten has more or less taken over the terminal end of a bass rod, and most of the reason given for it is some version of "it's denser, so it's better." That is true, but it gets repeated so loosely that it is worth putting real numbers to — because the honest version is more useful than the marketing version, and it tells you where tungsten is genuinely worth paying for and where it isn't.

What a tungsten weight actually is

A tungsten fishing weight is not pure tungsten, and any brand claiming otherwise is either confused or hoping you are. Pure tungsten melts at 6,192 °F — higher than any other metal — which makes casting it the way lead is cast completely impractical. Instead, tungsten powder is mixed with a small amount of a softer binding metal and pressed under enormous pressure, then sintered: heated until the particles fuse into a solid without ever fully melting.

That binder is what the percentage refers to. A 97% tungsten weight is 97% tungsten powder and about 3% binder. The binder is not filler in the dishonest sense — without it there is no way to form the shape at all. What matters is how much of it there is, because every point of binder is a point of density you don't get.

The density numbers, honestly

Here is where most articles overstate things. The figures worth knowing:

  • Pure tungsten: about 19.25 g/cm³
  • 97% sintered tungsten (what tackle actually is): roughly 17.5 g/cm³
  • Lead: 11.34 g/cm³

So a real tungsten weight is about 1.5 times denser than lead — not "nearly twice," which you will see claimed constantly. That is still a large difference, but it is worth being precise, because the next step is where people get misled.

For the same weight, tungsten takes up about 35% less volume than lead. That sounds enormous. But volume is three-dimensional, so a 35% volume reduction only works out to roughly 13% smaller across. Put a 1/4 oz tungsten worm weight next to a 1/4 oz lead one and the tungsten is clearly smaller — but it is not half the size, and anyone telling you it is has not held both.

Thirteen percent still matters a great deal when the weight is being pulled through a mat or a brush pile. It just isn't magic.

What the density actually buys you

You feel more

This is the real argument for tungsten and it has nothing to do with size. Tungsten is dramatically harder than lead — lead is soft enough to mark with a fingernail. A hard, dense object transmits vibration far better than a soft one, which absorbs it. When your weight ticks gravel, shell or a hard clay edge, more of that information survives the trip up the line.

Pair it with a low-stretch braid — braid has very little stretch, not zero — and the difference between "something is down there" and "that's shell, not wood" becomes real.

It gets through cover better

A smaller profile means less to hang up on. The gain compounds in matted vegetation, where you are asking the weight to part a canopy rather than slide past a single branch.

It's not lead

Lead is restricted in some waters and some tournament formats. Tungsten sidesteps that question entirely.

Where tungsten is not the answer

An honest guide should say this: tungsten costs several times what lead does, and there are places that money does nothing for you. If you're dragging a weight across clean sand in open water, sensitivity is not the limiting factor and neither is profile. If you routinely lose rigs to snags, a pack of tungsten disappearing into a brush pile stings in a way lead doesn't.

Tungsten is also harder on the things it touches. Because it doesn't deform, it can wear a knot faster than lead does when it slides freely, which is a good argument for a bobber stop and one of the reasons a properly finished bore matters more than the metal does.

Buy tungsten where feel and profile decide the bite — Texas rigs in cover, flipping, drop shot, finesse. That's most of bass fishing, but it isn't all of it.

The bore matters as much as the metal

Every weight the line passes through is a potential failure point. Many tungsten weights ship with a plastic or brass insert to protect the line, which works until the insert works loose — and then you have a sharp shoulder sawing at your knot on every hookset.

The alternative is an insert-free bore polished smooth in the finishing process, so there is nothing to come out and nothing to catch. When you are comparing two weights at similar prices, look through the hole. It tells you more than the label does.

What size should you actually use?

The short version: start lighter than you think. The most common mistake is over-weighting, which kills fall rate and feel to buy depth you didn't need.

A sensible first handful

If you're starting from nothing, four items cover most of a season on most lakes:

Reading a pack before you buy

Two things on a package are worth more than the marketing copy. The first is the purity percentage — if it isn't printed, ask why. The second is the piece count, because tungsten is usually sold in small packs and the per-pack price can look very different from the per-weight price. A four-pack and a two-pack at similar prices are not similar deals.

Sizes marked on the weight itself rather than only on the card are worth paying for too. Tip a few packs into one tray over a season and unmarked weights become guesswork.
