How to Tell If Your Fishing Weight Is Real Tungsten (Not Lead or a Cheap Blend)

If you've ever pulled a "tungsten" weight out of a bargain bulk pack and thought, this doesn't feel right — you're not wrong to wonder. Not everything sold as tungsten actually is, and the difference shows up exactly when you don't want it to: on the water, trying to feel a subtle bite through twenty feet of line.

Here's how to actually check what's in your tackle box, starting with the tests that need nothing but your hands and finishing with one that gives you a real number.

Why this even happens

Tungsten is genuinely difficult to work with. It melts at 6,192 °F, so it can't be cast like lead — it has to be powdered, pressed and sintered, which needs different equipment and more of it. That cost is real, and it creates an obvious temptation: dilute the tungsten with more binder, or skip the tungsten core entirely and plate something cheaper.

The result is a weight labelled "tungsten" that doesn't deliver the density or the hardness that made you want tungsten in the first place. At Tungsten Edge every weight is 97% tungsten — but whoever you bought from, here's how to check what you've actually got.

1. The size-for-weight test

Real 97% tungsten runs around 17.5 g/cm³ against lead's 11.34. For the same weight, that means roughly 35% less volume.

Be careful how you read that, because volume is three-dimensional. A 35% volume reduction is only about 13% smaller across. So a genuine 1/4 oz tungsten weight next to a 1/4 oz lead one is noticeably smaller — but if you were expecting it to be half the size, you'll talk yourself into thinking the real one is fake.

How to check it: compare like for like, same shape, same rated size. If they are near enough identical in size, one of them isn't what it claims. If the "tungsten" is only a hair smaller, be suspicious — that's the signature of a heavily diluted blend.

2. The hardness test

This is the most reliable quick check, and it's the one most people skip.

Lead is soft. You can dent it with a fingernail, mark it with a key, and shave it with a knife edge. Tungsten is hard — it will not dent, and a knife edge skates off it.

How to check it: press a thumbnail hard into an unpainted or worn area. If it leaves a mark, that is not tungsten. This test is close to conclusive in the fail direction: no amount of blending makes lead hard, so anything that dents easily has a lot of something soft in it.

3. The magnet test

Pure tungsten is not magnetic. Some low-cost weights use a steel core, or a tungsten-steel composite, and steel very much is.

How to check it: touch a strong rare-earth magnet to the weight — a fridge magnet usually isn't strong enough to tell you anything. A clear pull means a ferrous core.

One honest caveat: some legitimate tungsten alloys use nickel and iron as the binder, and those can show a faint magnetic response. A slight tug is not proof of a fake. A weight that sticks is.

4. The water displacement test — the one that gives you a number

Every test above is a judgement call. This one measures density directly, and it takes about five minutes with a kitchen scale.

  1. Weigh the weight in grams. Call that M. (A 1/4 oz weight should read about 7.1 g — if it doesn't, the labelling is off before you start.)
  2. Part-fill a narrow measuring cylinder or medicine cup with water and note the level.
  3. Drop the weight in and note the new level. The difference is the volume, V, in millilitres — which is the same as cm³.
  4. Divide: M ÷ V = density.

Read it against these:

  • 17–18 g/cm³ — genuine high-purity tungsten.
  • 14–16 — a real but diluted blend. Lower purity than claimed.
  • 11–12 — that's lead.
  • 7–8 — steel or zinc with a coating.

Small weights displace very little water, so use the biggest one you own, or drop several identical weights in at once and divide by the count. Precision improves fast that way.

5. Check the stated purity — and be suspicious of silence

Any brand confident in its material will publish the number, usually 95–97%. The remaining few percent is the binder that makes forming the weight possible at all, which is why nobody honest claims 100%.

Red flag: a listing that just says "tungsten" with no percentage anywhere. The number is cheap to print and expensive to actually hit — which is exactly why the sellers who miss it leave it off.

Price tells a similar story. Tungsten costs meaningfully more to produce than lead. If a bulk pack is priced like lead, the material probably is.

6. Look at the bore and the wear pattern

Two things show up after a few trips rather than in the package.

The bore: many weights hide a plastic or brass insert inside the hole to keep the line off a rough edge. That's a patch over a manufacturing shortcut, and when the insert works loose you're left with a sharp shoulder sawing at your knot. A properly finished weight has a smooth, polished bore and nothing in it.

The finish: coatings on a hard, dense core hold up. If paint sheets off after a handful of casts through rock, that often points to a soft core flexing under impact, or a coating rushed onto a surface it never bonded to.

What to do if you've got fakes

Don't throw them away — they're still weight. Keep them for open-water dragging in sand or on clean bottom where feel isn't the deciding factor, and for anywhere you expect to lose rigs. Save the real tungsten for cover, for finesse, and for anything where a subtle bite has to travel a long way up the line to reach you.

The bottom line

No single test is conclusive on its own. Taken together they are: if a weight is barely smaller than lead, dents under a thumbnail, grabs a magnet, and measures 12 g/cm³ on the kitchen scale, you already have your answer.
