Fishing Current: How Much Weight to Hold Bottom in Moving Water

Current is a great equalizer in bass fishing. Moving water — a river, a creek pulling after rain, a lake below a dam that's generating — positions bass predictably and often puts them in a feeding mood, which is why river rats love it. But it also does something to your presentation that trips up a lot of anglers: it pushes your bait downstream and lifts it off the bottom. Fishing current well is mostly a weight problem, and once you solve it, moving water becomes one of the most dependable bites there is.

Why current changes everything

Flowing water works on your bait constantly. It sweeps a light weight downstream so it never settles where you aimed, it lifts the bait off the bottom the same way wind does, and it bows your line so you lose feel. Meanwhile the bass are doing the opposite of drifting — they tuck in behind current breaks like rocks, eddies, bridge pilings, and laydowns and face upstream, letting the flow bring food to them while they sit in the slack and burn no energy. So your job is to get the bait down into that slack pocket behind the break and keep it there long enough to draw a strike — and that takes enough weight to beat the current.

Go heavier to hold the bottom

The rule is simple: the more current, the more weight. In a light creek flow you might only bump up one size from your still-water weight; below a generating dam with real current pushing, you may double it. The goal is a weight that gets to the bottom fast and stays planted while the flow works around it, instead of tumbling downstream. Cast up-current of the break and let your bait wash down into that pocket, using just enough weight to settle it in the slack rather than blow straight through it. The bites usually come the instant the bait drops into that cushion. Placing the weight right is the whole skill, and it's why matching the weight to the flow matters so much.

Dam releases change the game hour to hour

On a lot of river and tailrace fisheries the current isn't constant — it ramps up and down with power generation. Slack water at daybreak can turn into a real push by mid-morning when they start pulling water, and a spot that fished perfectly with a 1/4 oz might need 3/8 or 1/2 oz two hours later. Pay attention to how hard the water is moving and re-size as it changes through the day, the same way you'd re-read water clarity.
